Annika was a Etherealki Tidemaker who befriended the Darkling when they were children.
Biography[]
Annika's mother was killed by drüskelle when they were living near Overüt. Her father moved their family to live in the Ulle's settlement near the Fjerdan border. She was bullied by the Ulle's son Lev because she was a weak summoner, and her younger sister Sylvi was believed to be otkazat'sya.
When Eryk and his mother Lena came to their settlement, he defended the sisters when Lev threatened them and their father, temporarily blinding Lev and his two friends with shadows. Annika and Sylvi then befriended him. When Eryk and Annika shook hands, Annika discovered that he was an amplifier, although she promised not to tell.[1]
Annika later set out to hunt a bear amplifier nearby so she could increase her weak power. She invited Eryk to help her, and after they had walked through the woods for some time, they came across Sylvi's hat surrounded by patches of blood. Using shadows to hide themselves, Eryk and Annika entered the nearby otkazat'sya village. There, they found Sylvi, who had gotten lost trying to find the bear for her sister. Annika was angry that the amplifier had been wasted.
On the way back to the camp, Annika and Eryk bonded over their similar experiences as Grisha. However, Sylvi was still frustrated at having to leave the village. She stomped her foot and was sent falling when the rock crumbled beneath her. Annika reached out to save her sister but almost fell herself, and Eryk was forced to grab her, amplifying Annika's power and allowing her to save Sylvi by creating a tree out of ice.[2]
At dinner, Annika invited Eryk to go swimming with her and Sylvi that night. When he arrived, only Annika was there. She trapped him in ice, then approached him with a rock, planning to kill him so she could claim an amplifier. Eryk pleaded with her, promising to protect her himself so she would not need to do this, but she had already made up her mind.
Lev arrived. Eryk revealed her plan to Lev, who now wanted to kill Eryk himself. Lev's greater weight broke the ice, sending them all into the water. Annika and Lev fought over Eryk, who used the Cut for the first time, killing them both. He framed the otkazat'sya village for their deaths.[1]
Physical description[]
Annika had light hair and blue eyes, as was common close to the Fjerdan border. Her voice had a Fjerdan lilt.[1]

- In the short story, Annika finds out that Eryk is an amplifier after he blinds Lev. However, in the graphic novel, she only realizes after Eryk grabs her hand and Annika saves Sylvi from falling down the mountain, a scene that was not in the original story.
