Bergin is a Fjerdan Durast that was forced to convert Reyem Yul-Kaat into a khergud soldier.

Biography[]

Bergin was a translator working for a shipping concern in Fjerda when his Materialki powers were discovered and he was forced to leave the country. However, he was intercepted by Shu Han troops, given jurda parem, and taken captive. Bergin had to work on Reyem Yul-Kaat, who was given the name Locust, and convert him into a khergud soldier.[1] He spent nearly three months there and formed a good relationship with Reyem, teaching him Fjerdan swear words as a distraction from the pain.[2]

Rule of Wolves[]

Bergin is sleeping in the Grisha dormitory in the khergud laboratories when Ehri Kir-Taban, Mayu Kir-Kaat, and Tamar Kir-Bataar enter. He raises his head and looks furious when the doctor refers to him as a "volunteer". Bergin stares as Mayu greets Reyem, and he cries out when Makhi Kir-Taban gives Reyem the stimulant to wake up and attack.[1]

Bergin tells Ehri how she can escape through the sluiceway. As Reyem strikes Mayu, Bergin shouts in Fjerdan at him, causing Reyem to come back to himself. Bergin then takes the parem antidote Tamar gives him.[3] He demands that all the Grisha prisoners and khergud be taken to Ahmrat Jen so that the people could see what had been done to them. However, they are taken to the summer palace instead, and Bergin correctly predicts that there will be no punishment for the queen.[2]

When the khergud participate in the battle against Fjerda, Reyem protects Bergin from the gunfire. Bergin chooses to go to the front to fight for Ravka, and Reyem decides that the khergud will fight along with him in support of the Grisha.[4] They later work together to locate Jarl Brum's secret laboratories under Tamar's command.[5]

Physical description[]

Bergin has flaxen hair, ruddy pink skin, and blue eyes. After being given jurda parem, he becomes frail and his eyes appear hollow.[1]
