Big Bolliger was a bouncer at the Crow Club and a member of the Dregs until Kaz Brekker outed him as a spy for the Black Tips.
Biography[]
Big Bolliger, along with Jesper Fahey, is chosen to be one of Kaz Brekker's seconds in the parley between the Dregs and the Black Tips. Bolliger pats down Geels and Elzinger, declaring them free of weapons for the parley.
When Geels threatens Kaz during the parley, Kaz baits Geels into ordering Willem Holst, one of the stadwatch guards he bribed, to fire on Kaz's contingent. The shot hits Bolliger in the gut. Jesper attempts to staunch the bleeding and tells Kaz that Bolliger needs a medik, but Kaz is unconcerned with Bolliger's injury. Geels becomes nervous because he had bribed Holst to shoot Kaz, not Bolliger, but Kaz reveals that he blackmailed Holst in order to outbid Geels' bribe.
Jesper and the other Dregs realize Bolliger's treachery when Geels draws a gun on Kaz – after Bolliger had searched him and declared him clear of weapons. Kaz explains that he knew Bolliger was working as an informant for the Black Tips. Kaz had noticed Bolliger, generally a lazy person, regularly leaving early to ostensibly get breakfast on the other side of the city, and the Black Tips began encroaching on Dregs territory at the same time.
After Kaz threatens to kill Geels' girlfriend, Elise, the parley ends without further violence. Kaz pronounces that Big Bolliger must leave Ketterdam forever – if he doesn't bleed out first – and warns Geels not to help Bolliger or allow him to rejoin the Black Tips. Bolliger begins to drag himself across the floor of the Exchange. Inej Ghafa wonders if he will die alone from his wounds or survive, leave Ketterdam, and live as an exile.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Bolliger is lazy and enjoys sleeping in. He is willing to betray the makeshift family of the Dregs, but he also has a strong will.[1]
Physical description[]
Bolliger is tall enough to look Elzinger, who is nearly seven feet tall, in the eye. He is "perfectly suited to tossing out drunks and wasters, but too heavy on his feet to be much use when it came to a real tussle." Bolliger carries several weapons, including a hatchet, a switchblade, and his preferred weapon: a thick chain weighted with a heavy padlock.[1]
