Hoede was a member of the Merchant Council, the governing body of Kerch. He was highly placed in Ketterdam's government.
Biography[]
Hoede lived in an extravagant house on the Geldstraat. He held the indentures of three Grisha: a Fabrikator named Yuri, a Squaller named Emil Retvenko, and a Healer named Anya. Hoede considered them his treasured possessions and testaments to his wealth.
Six of Crows[]
Hoede, along with Jan Van Eck and the captain of the stadwatch, uses his boathouse to test the effects of jurda parem on Grisha. He forces Yuri, then Anya, to ingest parem and perform various tasks with Grisha power. Hoede has Anya heal minor cuts on a small boy, then gives her parem and instructs her to do more. However, parem gives Anya the ability to control minds and she orders the guards to shoot open the cell. Hoede tells his men not to kill Anya, as she is worth a great deal, but Anya orders Hoede and all the men in the area to wait. She orders Hoede to open the door,[1] then has him cut off his thumb, which he does while smiling.
Having lost a lot of blood, Hoede is moved to the country with his family and the staff from his house. He is in the same "waiting" state as the guards—wasting away and unwilling to do anything but wait. After the failed parem test, Hoede's mansion is cordoned off and quarantined, leading to rumors of a firepox outbreak.[2]
Personality and traits[]
Hoede was dismissive of the lives of his Grisha indentures, regarding them only as possessions. He was not cautious, as shown when he dismissed Jan Van Eck's concern about the effects of testing jurda parem on a Corporalnik. Hoede was impatient and commanding toward his servants and cared about the appearances of any guards associated with his house.
Physical description[]
Like most of Ketterdam's merchants, Hoede dressed in mercher black. He was elderly and had liver-spotted hands.[1]
