"You can save the rest of them. Try not to mess it up."
— Dominik's last words to Nikolai, Meet You in the Meadow

Dominik Vertov was a commander in the First Army and Nikolai Lantsov's childhood friend. He operated Zvedya, a fort south of Kribirsk.

Biography[]

Dominik was Nikolai Lantsov's whipping boy as a child. His parents were paid by King Pyotr for this role, but once he and Nikolai met, they became close friends.

When Nikolai arrives at Zvedya, Dominik is there to greet him. He pledges that they will avenge the deaths of his brother and the King, and stands by Nikolai's side as he addresses the other soldiers. Dominik tells Malyen Oretsev to lead a team towards the Firebird.[1]

Later, Dominik informs Nikolai that General Kirigan's forces have fortified their hold at Keramzin. He talks with his friend about Alina shortly afterward, commenting that Nikolai's feelings for her through their fake marriage is almost comical. Dominik also reminisces about the day he first believed that Nikolai would make a great king.

Dominik and Nikolai leave for Keramzin, bringing Adrik and Nadia Zhabin with them and their crew. However, Dominik soon spots Kirigan's Grisha underneath their flying ship, and they are taken down with an Inferni fireball. Bleeding from a head wound, he and the others flee. Kirigan's Grisha follow them as they sprint through the grounds. Dominik blows a whistle, rallying more soldiers to fight. He pulls Nikolai to cover as he fires a pistol himself.

They continue to run from the advancing Grisha, and Dominik briefly leaves his shelter to issue commands to another soldier. He then tells Nikolai that Grisha have ambushed the cliffside entrance. At this point, Fruzsi, one of the Darkling's Tidemakers, has begun to manipulate the water in the air around her by freezing it into shards of ice that a Squaller, Nisho, directs towards the soldiers. Nikolai stands up to return fire, but Dominik pushes him away, using his own body as a shield to protect his friend from the ice hammering down around them.

Shards of ice puncture Dominik's back before they reach cover. Frantic, Nikolai shouts for a Healer, but none comes. Dominik tells him to save the rest of Ravka's people before dying in his friend's arms. Soon afterward, Nikolai avenges his death by shooting Fruzsi.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Dominik was extremely loyal to and protective of those he cared about. He was brave and unwilling to back down from a fight, as well as selfless, a trait he demonstrated in his final act of sacrifice.

Physical description[]

Dominik had dark hair, complete with a mustache and beard. He wore a uniform typical of the First Army and was often seen in a matching cap. After crash-landing in the Hummingbird, he sustained a cut on his forehead and blood dried down the side of his face.

Relationships[]

Nikolai Lantsov[]

Dominik was Nikolai's whipping boy when he was a child, but they grew so close that Dominik considered Nikolai the greatest friend of his life. While fighting the Darkling's Grisha, he spent the entire time trying to protect Nikolai and was ultimately killed in doing so.

Appearances[]

Season 2[]

Trivia[]

  • Dominik is remembered in King of Scars as Nikolai's childhood friend who died in a battle against Fjerda when they were young—before Nikolai became Sturmhond. In the show, he lives long enough to see Nikolai return to his role as a prince, and is instead killed by the Darkling's Grisha.
    • In both versions, Nikolai calls out for a Healer without success. However, Dominik's last words are more optimistic in the show than the book, where he only tells Nikolai that Ravka will get him in the end.
