The Ferolind was the schooner used by Kaz Brekker and his crew to get to Fjerda.

History[]

A decoy of the Ferolind was put in Fifth Harbor as an extra security measure. It was exploded[1] by a member of the Black Tips or the Razorgulls.[2] The real Ferolind was docked at berth twenty-two, and Rotty and Specht emerge from the inside.[3] Jesper Fahey fires down at the attacking gangs from the crow's nest.[2] The schooner departs from the harbor as soon as Kaz boards with an injured Inej Ghafa, and Kaz yells at Specht, the captain, to get his crew in shape. Belowdecks, Nina Zenik tends to the wounded, and Kaz returns above deck to torture Oomen.[4]

Matthias Helvar and Wylan Van Eck become seasick aboard the vessel. Kaz, Jesper, Wylan, and Matthias discuss the Ice Court plans on the forecastle deck.[5] The crew spends over a week on the Ferolind as they pass through the busiest trade routes of the True Sea, traveling to the northern whaling ports. Inej finally heals enough to walk around the deck with Nina and Jesper, receiving many greetings from the crew.[6] When Kaz finally approaches, she sits with her back to the ship's hull, and he leans against the railing after their conversation.[7]

Specht waits until dusk to land on the northern coast, and they assemble their gear before leaving. The Ferolind—which has papers with the Kerch seal that cover for them—is the Crows' escape route after the Ice Court.[8] The Ferolind waits in the Djerholm harbor for them to board, then Specht commands the crew to speed up the schooner.[9]

Inej and Nina talk on the prow. Kaz stands near the mast, then asks Nina to tailor Wylan. Kaz and Inej watch the water before Inej leaves him.[10] As the schooner heads south, the crew worries about Nina and her withdrawal from jurda parem. Meanwhile, Specht and Rotty teach Inej about anything nautical. They drop anchor in Kerch, and Jesper, Kaz, and Rotty row to Fifth Harbor in a longboat.[11] Kaz also orders Specht to take Kuwei Yul-Bo and Nina in the second longboat to the abandoned cages below the Hellgate prison tower.

On Vellgeluk, Jan Van Eck commands his Tidemakers to destroy the Ferolind, where he believes his son is.[12]

Description[]

The Ferolind was a little schooner with its name written in bold script on the side. It flew the purple Kerch fishes and the flag of the Haanraadt Bay Company.[1] The crow's nest was at least twenty feet up,[3] and belowdecks was a narrow surgeon's cabin lit by bright lanterns.[4] It had two longboats.[11] The Ferolind was later completely crushed by Tidemaker-created walls of water, which broke the mast and tore the sail.[12]
