Ilya Morozova, also known as Sankt Ilya in Chains, was the father of Baghra and the grandfather of the Darkling and Ulla. He was obsessed with creating amplifiers and was one of the first and most powerful Grisha.
Biography[]
He was rumored to have created three amplifiers: the stag, the sea whip, and the firebird.
Morozova spent years traveling in search of the stag and the sea whip to create amplifiers from them. But when his wife became pregnant, he settled in a small village, where he continued to experiment and planned to create additional amplifiers.[1]
His unnamed wife was an otkazat'sya. They had two children; the couple first produced Baghra and then a seemingly otkazat'sya child. Alina Starkov speculates that Morozova's second daughter may have also been Grisha, but hid her power and somehow survived.
Martyrdom[]
Morozova's martyrdom happened when he brought his second daughter back to life after Baghra accidentally killed her using the Cut. The villagers wrapped him and his daughter in irons and threw them off a bridge into the water, their chains pulling them below.
His revived daughter was later revealed to be the third amplifier, the result of her being brought back to life. She went on to mother a line of descendants, and the last of her bloodline is Malyen Oretsev.
A church to Sankt Ilya was built over the house where his family once lived, in the same town that martyred him.[2] The church is still standing.
Personality and traits[]
Ilya Morozova is described as dedicated to his work at the expense of all else. Although he loved his wife and his children, he was too driven by his experiments and could be neglectful to his family when engrossed in his work.[1]
Powers and abilities[]
In the otkazat'sya village where he lived, Ilya worked as a woodworker. He would also heal villagers who came to him with wounds and ailments.
Although he is known as one of the most famous Fabrikators, Baghra says that he did not draw a distinction between Grisha orders and also seems to possess abilities typically associated with Healers.[1] His philosophy regarding Grisha power was "Are we not all things?", a phrase repeated throughout his writings.
Ilya also has the ability to wield merzost. He used this for resurrection to create amplifiers.
He also invented Grisha steel, unbreakable glass, and liquid fire.[3]
