Like Calls to Like is the third episode of season 2 of Netflix's Shadow and Bone and the eleventh episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
A powerful ally emerges amid Alina’s attempt to tear down the Fold. Kaz reckons with ghosts from his past. Kirigan spares no mercy to expand his power.
Plot summary[]
Alina is feeling more confident and embraces new challenges. Sturmhond joins her as they plan to land with their secondary vessel, the Hummingbird, and deploy a smaller steam-powered ship that takes off and begins flying, bringing them closer to the Fold.
Meanwhile, Kaz and the Crows hide in a secret location to avoid being detected. Wylan reminds everyone of the past Firepox plague, which claimed many lives and resulted in bodies floating in the sea. This triggers painful memories for Kaz, as a flashback shows him crying as a child on a raft made of dead bodies. Kaz tells Wylan and Jesper to investigate Pekka’s glass factory in Appelbroek.
General Kirigan confronts his mother about the war as his plans to conquer beyond the Palace. He needs more men and recruits David to help him.
In the middle of the Fold, Alina and her group sail into the darkness. Alina tries to use her powers in an attempt to control it. She unleashes powerful waves of energy that seem to work, but memories of Kirigan interrupt her concentration. She passes out. The ship, however, is still in the middle of the Fold which means they’re in trouble.
The ship manages to defend themselves against the Volcra, but the ship's sail gets torn and damaged. Fortunately, Alina regains consciousness long enough to get them out, but the ship crash-lands. Alina realizes that she's not strong enough yet.
The group end up on Ravkan land and a group of soldiers approach them. They recognize Sturmhond and bow, which initially confuses Alina. She realizes he is really Nikolai Lantsov, Major of the 22nd Regiment and the Second Son of King Pyotr. Alina is furious at Nikolai for lying to her, but he shrugs it off, claiming that he needed to protect his image and name, just like Alina did. He used the Sturmhond persona to help bring her in and find her.
Together, they travel to the Spinning Wheel—a Grisha sanctuary where Alina is reunited with Nadia, who runs the workshop. As more Grisha are killed every day, they must band together, and Zoya suggests that Ravka is on the brink of collapse, so they must unite and fight back.
Jesper and Wylan break into Appelbroek by posing as repairmen. Wylan shows off his piano-playing skills, impressing Jesper. Kaz tells Inej that Pekka killed his brother, and the two find solace in each other. Kaz warns Inej about Mogens, who is hunting her. Inej fights and kills the taxidermist who was after her.
Meanwhile, Kirigan becomes aware of Alina's location. He tells his mother that he needs to find the firebird before Alina does but Baghra tells him she doesn’t know where it is. The Darkling cuts off her finger to use her bones to find out.
David and Genya decide to leave and warn Alina. Alina suspects the Darkling is still alive and considers Nikolai's offer to marry into the Royal Family for protection.
Jesper and Wylan return to find Kaz beaten up, but he's gained the allegiance of the Dregs. Kaz also found out that the kid at the estate is called Alby Rollins. He wants to kill him for revenge.
Nina goes to see Matthias in Hellgate but she is disturbed after watching his cage fight. She attracts Pekka's attention and is offered a deal to bring him Kaz—or else he will put Matthias in danger.
