The Grishaverse

"Fear is a phoenix. You can watch it burn a thousand times and still it will return."
— Liliyana Garin, remembered in King of Scars

Liliyana Garin was the aunt of Zoya Nazyalensky and the sister of Sabina Garin.

Biography[]

Lilyana had left her original home and braved a journey across the Shadow Fold to make a life for herself in Novokribirsk, where she could buy cheap property and set up a corner shop.

When Zoya was nine years old, Sabina tried to sell her off to Valentin Grankin, but Liliyana arrived on the day of the wedding and tried to convince Sabina that it wouldn't be long until Zoya was old enough to become a soldier. Sabina did not relent, so Liliyana tried to convince the townspeople of this cruelty. However, Grankin began to hit Liliyana repeatedly with a walking stick, sparking a fury inside Zoya that led to the revelation of Zoya's Etherealki powers. Liliana was very happy about this, knowing that it meant that Valentin now could not marry her, since she had to be brought to the Little Palace to train.

Following Zoya's demonstration of her powers, Liliyana escorted Zoya to the Little Palace. They had barely any money, so they slept in ditches. When they arrived, a tester did a quick examination of Zoya's abilities before confirming her Grisha powers. They gave Liliyana a coin for her troubles, and Liliyana said goodbye to Zoya. Zoya wanted her to stay, but Liliyana told her that she had to return home to tend to her chickens. The two wrote each other many letters over the years.

A couple years later, when Zoya completed her first travel across the Fold, she immediately headed to Liliyana's shop, where they embraced and talked. Liliyana introduced Zoya to a girl named Lada she had adopted, who demanded that Zoya help her draw a picture of the Little Palace. When Zoya left, she did not know that this would be the last time she saw Liliyana.

When the Darkling destroyed Novokribirsk, Liliyana was with a customer, who she shoved out of the way of a volcra as a selfless last act.[1]
