Ohval Saran, formerly known as Sankta Neyar, is the Saint who forged the Neshyenyer—a powerful blade so sharp it can cut shadow. She is a formidable Durast and the wife of The Disciple.
Biography[]
When the Fabrikator Kho created an undefeatable clockwork army that attacked Shu Han, Ohval set out to destroy them. She created the Neshyenyer through hours of work and prayers, fighting for three days and three nights until the last soldier fell and she laid down the weapon.
Ohval saw her entire family die, along with her loved ones. She made her first husband into a table after his death. After hundreds of years, she married The Disciple, who returned the Neshyenyer to her. They lived in a home in Bhez Ju that Ohval built and rigged with traps to protect her husband.[1]
Meeting the Crows[]
Kaz Brekker and Nina Zenik go to Ohval's tea shop and order chrysanthemum tea so they can talk to her. Ohval is skeptical of Kaz, who initially refuses to remove his gloves and take part in the Shu customs. After they inquire about the Neshyenyer, Ohval tells them they would have to steal it from Ahmrat Jen, where the fake is. She signals the waitress to spill tea on Kaz and then leaves them.
Nina and Zoya Nazyalensky try to follow her as she walks to an apothecary. However, Ohval catches Nina in the act and chokes her, while the other Crows and Tolya Yul-Bataar are poisoned as they attempt to break into her home for the blade.[2]
Ohval soon finds the Crows, who have managed to consume an antidote to the poison. Inej Ghafa attempts to sneak up behind her, but Ohval senses the metal in her clothes and kicks her away. She then fights the entire group off expertly, knocking away their weapons with her powers and turning them against their owners. She uses the chain in her hat to choke Jesper Fahey.
When Ohval is moments away from killing the group by manipulating the iron in their blood, Kaz appears with her husband. The Disciple tells her that they have visitors. Tolya restates that they only want the Neshyenyer, and The Disciple reveals that Ohval is Sankta Neyar—the person who forged it in the first place. Ohval tells the Crows about her love for her husband and eventually agrees to let them borrow the blade to defeat the Darkling's nichevo'ya.
Ohval invites Jesper inside and recognizes that he is a Durast, like her. She tells him to work on his power before handing over the blade.[1]
Physical description[]
Ohval has Shu traits that are inspired by Asian culture. She has fair skin and long black hair. She wears a gold satin kimono with orange flowers printed on it. Her garment has a black collar with red ribbons. Ohval's waist is also marked by a red ribbon on top of the yellow/white sash (the belt of the kimono). The kimono has many layers that flow as she jumps during the fight, and the top layer is made of several silk triangles. Her head ornament is similar to a traditional Chinese hat named Fengguan or "phoenix coronet". It is placed horizontally above her head and is decorated by pink jewels in flower-shape. Two gold jewelries hang on each side of her face.[1]
Powers and abilities[]
Ohval is an expert Durast. She is also highly accomplished in hand-to-hand combat.
Relationships[]
The Disciple[]
After closing her heart for hundreds of years, Ohval allowed herself to become blindsided by her love for The Disciple. He returned the Neshyenyer to her and they married. Ohval became his caretaker, creating elaborate traps to protect him and fighting anybody who came near.[1]
