The Grishaverse

Jurda parem is a drug created by Bo Yul-Bayur that used jurda as the main ingredient.

Overview[]

Jurda parem is a powder that tastes sweeter than the ordinary stimulant, and is lethal to non-Grisha. To a Grisha, the drug modifies their power by changing their perception of the world in an opposite and unnatural direction.

It is extremely addictive to Grisha, and rapidly weakens the body of the user. Those who are able to overcome the drug addiction and withdrawal syndrome are still changed permanently. The only known survivor was from the Corporalki Order, and lost the ability to manipulate living substances and instead gained the power to fully control dead bodies, bone shards, and even bone-dust.

But it is assumed that if a Grisha on parem were to take the antidote, their powers would not be altered, and that they would retain their original powers.

History[]

Jurda parem was inadvertently created by Bo Yul-Bayur in his search for a drug that would suppress Grisha powers and prevent them from being detected. The drug allowed the Shu Han to gain power and do impossible acts like assassinating a Zemeni trade ambassador in a locked room, paying off all debts to Kerch, and stealing military documents from a Ravkan base. Fearing his government would use jurda parem for war and wanting to defect, Bo Yul-Bayur sent samples to the Kerch Merchant Council to convince them of the drug's extraordinary effects and to seek asylum for himself and his son. The effects of the drug were discovered by testing it on three Grisha indentured servants. Through its spies, Fjerda also discovered the drug and kidnapped Bo Yul-Bayur, holding him in the Ice Court.

Councilman Jan Van Eck claimed that the Merchant Council hoped to control the drug in order to prevent massive economic upheaval that enhanced Grisha would cause, so he hired Kaz Brekker to rescue Bo Yul-Bayur from the Ice Court. However, in reality Van Eck kept the drug secret from the rest of the Council and wanted to create an international war that he would be able to heavily profit from.

Effects[]

Grisha Type New Power
Healer Enhanced healing — able to instantly heal themselves and others without contact and trace of injury. They also have moderate mind control.[1]
Tidemaker Matter state manipulation — can change the state of matter of their surroundings and themselves.[2] They can pull water molecules from the air and convert them into icicles, which then function as weapons.[3]
Squaller Weather manipulation — can create hurricanes and control the air around themselves to enable flight.[4]
Durast Periodic element manipulation — can change an element to a new one (or near identical version) like lead into gold;[2] able to interconnect flesh with metal;[5] ability to pull large chunks of rock and ice from the ground.[4]
Heartrender Mind control — can manipulate large groups of people in an instant. They also have heightened healing[6] and tailoring powers.[7] Additionally, they have enhanced vision, allowing them to see through tailored disguises and view minute details from farther away,[8] as well as enhanced hearing, letting them clearly hear the pulse and breathing of others in the same general area.[9]

Antidote[]

Before an antidote was found, Jesper Fahey suggested that it could have been found in the stem of the jurda plant, which has a balm that can be used as a depressant.

An antidote to jurda parem was produced in Ravka by Kuwei Yul-Bo and David Kostyk. It looks like a white powdery substance and has immediate effects. It was first used in the battle against Fjerda. It was later used in Shu Han on Tamar Kir-Bataar. The antidote requires more raw jurda than it takes to produce parem, which makes production difficult.
