Pekka Rollins is the leader of a gang in Ketterdam. He is an adversary of Kaz Brekker.
Biography[]
Conning Kaz and Jordie[]
When Kaz and Jordie Rietveld arrived in Ketterdam, Pekka introduced himself as Jakob Hertzoon and offered them a way to become rich.[1] Jordie gave him the proceeds from the sale of his father's farm, and Pekka told him to come back in a week.[2] However, Pekka conned the boys out of their money, forcing them to live on the streets, and Jordie succumbed to the plague.[3]
Searching for a Heartrender[]
Pekka Rollins and the Dime Lions attack the owner of the Orchid. Rollins is in need of a Heartrender for a one million kruge job, and he's aware of Milana at the Orchid. Pekka offers the man a deal. Either he gives over ownership of the establishment and comes to work for Pekka, where he'll only be given 10% of profits, or they'll simply kill him. Pekka threatens to carve him up and leave him in a barrel full of rats.
Unfortunately for Pekka, by the time he takes control of the Orchid, they discover that Milana is missing — taken by Kaz Brekker and the Crows.[4]
Threatening Kaz Brekker[]
Pekka Rollins and the Dime Lions attack Kaz in his office at the Crow Club. Kaz attempts to fight them off, but he is outnumbered. Rollins informs Kaz that the Orchid now belongs to the Dime Lions and that he stole from him when he took his Heartrender. Rollins makes Kaz a deal. Either he will walk away from the job and Rollins will take over for him or he can simply kill Kaz, cave his head in with his own cane and dump him in the harbor. On his way out, Kaz looks up to Rollins and asks if they've ever made a deal before. Rollins doesn't recognize him and says that if they had then Kaz would know better, or he'd be dead.[5]
Framing the Crows[]
Pekka buys out all of Fifth Harbor.[2] He murders Tante Heleen and takes her shares to the Crow Club, then converts the club into a building named the Kaelish Prince and frames the Crows for her murder. Pekka also gains possession of the Menagerie, and with it, Inej Ghafa's indentured contract. When Constable Sem fails to capture the Crows, Pekka shoots him with a stadwatch gun and pins his murder on Kaz as well. Kaz blows up the Kaelish Prince in response.[6]
Pekka catches Kaz searching his accountant's office. He brings in Mogens to capture Inej, and sets a trap for Jesper Fahey and Wylan Hendriks. Before Pekka can kill Kaz, Nina Zenik enters and sends him into unconsciousness with her Heartrender powers. The others manage to escape as well.[1]
Nina goes to Hellgate to find Matthias Helvar, but Pekka's men find her. Pekka threatens to have Matthias fight to the death if she fails to bring him Kaz.[2] Nina later drags Kaz to Pekka, who begins to beat him. However, the plague siren begins to wail and Kaz informs Pekka that firepox has spread to each of his businesses. Pekka is still determined to kill him before Kaz brings up Alby—Pekka's hidden son, and the person the Kaelish Prince was named after. Kaz says that he buried Alby alive and will reveal his location if Pekka recalls Jordie's name. Unable to remember, he kneels before Kaz and signs a confession for the murders of Tante Heleen and Constable Sem, as well as a quitclaim deed for Inej. Pekka then runs to Black Veil Cemetery and digs furiously in the ground before being arrested. As stadwatch officers take him away, Alby appears, never having been buried after all.[3]
In Hellgate[]
Pekka arrives in Hellgate as a prisoner. Another inmate, whose brother he had killed, attacks him, but Pekka beats him to death. He then threatens the rest of the inmates and rallies them to work for him.[7] Pekka later confronts Matthias and offers to give him purpose.[8] When Matthias asks to be put in the fights, Pekka pits him against a pair of wolves, which are sacred to Djel, and watches the fight from above. He orders Nina to be taken out after she tries to interfere.[9]
