"See how Reyem doesn't hesitate. Mayu is thinking; Reyem is listening. He hears the music of the fight."
— Reyem's proficiency in fighting, Rule of Wolves

Reyem Yul-Kaat, also known as Locust, is the twin brother of Mayu Kir-Kaat.

Biography[]

Reyem and Mayu were born in the town of Nehlu. Their mother was a teacher and taught them to eliminate their country accent so they would have every possible advantage. The twins often sparred as children, and despite Reyem's more intrinsic fighting ability, had a very close relationship as kebben. After Mayu joined the Tavgharad, Reyem joined a military unit and distinguished himself after Mayu encouraged him to try harder. This led to him being chosen for the khergud program, headed by the former Queen Makhi Kir-Taban of Shu Han and her doctor and advisor Minister Yerwei. They believed his talents were too good to waste.[1]

During his transformation to become khergud, Reyem formed a close, romantic bond with Bergin, a Fjerdan Grisha captured and forced to work in the program. They taught each other their languages, swapped stories of home, and kept each other human. He remarks that he would not have survived, or come out with his humanity, if he had not had Bergin.[2]

Rule of Wolves[]

Mayu travels with Ehri Kir-Taban and Tamar Kir-Bataar to the khergud facility, where they find Reyem. However, Queen Makhi wakes him up, and Reyem crushes Mayu's hand.[3] Tamar lodges an axe in his forearm, but is slammed to the wall. When he strikes Mayu, Bergin stops him by shouting Fjerdan swears, bringing Reyem to his senses. He then turns on the queen and her guards.[4]

The khergud are taken to the summer palace, and Reyem refuses to return home to his parents.[2] In the battle against Fjerda, Reyem protects Bergin from the gunfire. Bergin chooses to go to the front to fight for Ravka, and Reyem decides that the khergud will fight along with him in support of the Grisha.[5]

With the resolution of the khergud program by Ehri and Leyti Kir-Taban, Reyem is currently working with the rest of the surviving khergud and Tamar to find a safe place where they can live without fear of being experimented on or used as weapons.[6]

Personality and traits[]

"He was never mean to me, and he had every chance to be spiteful. My parents favored him, but he always shared—his books, his sweets. He wanted to see me happy."
— Mayu recalling Reyem's kindness, Rule of Wolves

Reyem and his sister are competitive, but despite almost always winning, he is never smug about it. Reyem is kind and works hard after Mayu encourages him.[1]

Physical description[]

Reyem is tall and lean. He always wears his long hair pulled back from his face in a high knot, and has a half-moon scar on his cheek. After becoming khergud, wings are attached to Reyem's back.[3]

Skills and abilities[]

Reyem was a strong combatant before becoming khergud,[1] and the transformation only helped. He had metal pincers fused to his spine, metal alloy bones, and enhanced speed, agility, strength, and senses. He can smell Grisha.[3]
