Rusalye is the second episode of season 2 of Netflix's Shadow and Bone and the tenth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Alina and Mal embark on a search for the second amplifier. Kaz hatches a scheme to lay waste to his nemesis. Kirigan seeks a cure for what ails him.
Plot summary[]
Alina demonstrates to Sturmhond that she is the Sun Summoner and demands he let her and Mal go. She tells him she wants to get rid of the Shadow Fold- not expand it like the rumors imply. She explains that to do this, she needs to track down the Sea Whip to use it as an amplifier to make her power stronger. Sturmhond decides to change some of his plans. He introduces Alina and Mal to the people on the ship. Alina and Mal go to bed. She’s woken up yet again from a nightmare about Kirigan.
Genya visits The Darkling in his quarters where he promises to find David for her if he's still alive. As she attempts to heal the scars on his face, the Darkling's nichevo'ya appears beside him, which scares Genya.
Kaz thinks about his brother while spying on Pekka Rollins. Later, he meets with Per Haskell at the Dregs Club and offers to be his business partner. Per Haskell is uninterested despite the money Kaz offers him.
Inej meets up with Jesper and shares the alarming news that their criminal record has worsened as they're now accused of murdering a constable. This raises concerns about Kaz's willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, even if it means destroying everything in their path. Kaz, Nina, and Wylan join them, and Nina questions their vendetta against Pekka Rollins. Kaz insists on keeping Pekka alive to frame him for their crimes, but Jesper and Inej think he might have other ideas.
Matthias' cellmate warns him about the tainted lobster and the tough bread as they eat. Matthias discovers that they share the same Fjerdan heritage but they know they must communicate in Kerch. His cellmate warns him that Kerch's justice system differs from Fjerda's, and Matthias is left to grapple with the guilt of his past actions, including his relationship with Nina, a Grisha.
Alina meets Sturmhond’s crew. On Sturmhond’s ship, Grisha and otkazat'sya work together as equals. She is introduced to Tolya and Tamar, who are both Heartrenders.
The Darkling meets with an Alkemi, Vladim Gulav, to try and relieve some of his pain. However, Vladim believes the pain is a result of the shadow monsters because merzost is an abomination.
Before the heist, Inej demands to know what happened between Kaz and Pekka, but he remains tight-lipped.
Later, below deck, Alina pays a visit to Sturmhond who emphasizes the importance of trusting him for their mission to succeed. He explains that she's not just a fancy cargo but a beacon of hope for the future, as she's the key to destroying the Fold. As they approach the location of the sea whip with the help of Mal's tracking abilities, Alina suggests that she can obtain the amplifier without killing the creature. However, the team soon finds themselves under attack and Alina is forced to defend herself by killing the creature.
Meanwhile, the Darkling retrieves a journal from a woman named Fruszi in the woods, who had it hidden away. There, Baghra has been trapped under a waterfall for some time.
Nina attempts to seduce the guard at the building's entrance, but when that fails, she resorts to using her Grisha powers. Kaz sneaks in through a window, while Jesper and Wylan navigate the streets with a horse and carriage.
Unfortunately, Pekka was one step ahead and catches Kaz in his office. Inej struggles on the roof, and Jesper and Wylan fall into a trap. Nina saves the day, taking down the Dime Lions despite getting shot. Kaz uses Wylan's explosives to retrieve what he needs, and they all reunite at Black Veil.
After mourning the loss of their crew members, Alina absorbs the scales and gains her second amplifier. Her newfound power overwhelms her, but Mal's embrace brings her back to her senses.
