Sankt Demyan of the Rime is the patron saint of the newly dead.

Biography[]

Demyan was a nobleman in eastern Fjerda. His land had a notable cemetery surrounded by a forest that grew thick enough to the point where no one could enter the cemetery. When asked to do something about it, Demyan sent his servants with axes to cut down the trees to create a path. However, a heavy rainstorm soon flooded the paths and into the cemetery, displacing grave markers and tearing apart the tombs. Demyan created an aqueduct around it to capture the flood, but it cast the cemetery in shade, thus killing the flowers and making the area cold.

Not sure what to do, he laid his hands on the ground and prayed to the Saints until a mountain rose under the cemetery, protecting it from flood and trees. None of the graves were disturbed except for Demyan's family crypt, which cracked. The people claimed that Demyan had used dark magic and disrespected his family and began to stone him with marble from the broken tomb until he was dead.

Legacy[]

The Monastery of Sankt Demyan was built in the hollowed-out top of a mountain of the Sikurzoi. It was originally a pilgrimage site, but had been turned into an observatory when Ravka lost the area to Fjerda in the border wars. The observatory was later abandoned and became known as the Spinning Wheel.[1]
