Sankta Margaretha was a Ketterdam jeweler who defeated a demon. She is the patron saint of thieves and lost children.

Biography[]

Margaretha's father owned a jeweler's shop in the Garden District of Ketterdam that sold many of Margaretha's creations. When a demon took up residence in a canal near Margaretha's apartment and started snatching children from the bridges, Margaretha noticed. She threw a sapphire at the demon, causing it to return to the canal in search of the gem. Margaretha tried to tell her neighbors about the demon, but they thought she had a fever and did not believe her.

The next morning, when the demon again tried to snatch a child from the bridge, Margaretha threw an emerald to distract it. She worried that one day she would be too slow to distract the demon and set about creating a heavy diamond brooch. Using a pulley system, she held the brooch outside her window above the canal. When the demon emerged, she dropped the brooch into the canal. The demon dove for the bottom of the canal, but the brooch was too heavy to lift, so it drowned.

Legacy[]

Every year, people light lanterns along the canal and pray to Margaretha.

Personality and traits[]

Margaretha was straightforward and sincere, "a practical girl who had never been given to fancy."[1] She displayed quick thinking and cleverness by exploiting the children-snatching demon's obsession with jewels to lead it to its own demise.

Powers and abilities[]

She was presumably a Durast, given her affinity for working with precious stones. The jewels she set were “brighter and clearer than they had any right to be.”[1]
