The Grishaverse

"This was like nothing I'd felt before. It was an animal, a creature of infinite fire that breathed with the stag's strength and the sea whip's wrath. It coursed through me, stealing my breath, breaking me up, dissolving my edges, until all I knew was light."
— The fetter's impact on Alina's power, Siege and Storm

The sea whip's fetter is an amplifier that consists of the seven golden scales of Rusalye.

History[]

Siege and Storm[]

At the Darkling's behest, Malyen Oretsev tracks down the sea whip. After a violent exchange with the Darkling and his guards, Alina Starkov kills Rusalye with a single blow, and Tamar Kir-Bataar cuts seven scales from the beast[1] for Alina to harness as a cuff-like amplifier that circles her wrists. Alina is immediately able to harness more light than before.[2]

Ruin and Rising[]

After the final battle of the Fold, the fetter breaks apart into pieces.[3]

Description[]

The scales that made up the fetter are edged in gold, unlike Rusalye's other scales. They fused in an overlapping row around Alina's wrist.[2]
