The Grishaverse

Tamar Kir-Bataar is the twin sister of Tolya Yul-Bataar and a Heartrender. She is a member of Sturmhond's crew.

Biography[]

Helping Alina hunt the Sea Whip[]

Tamar and Tolya touch down in Novyi Zem, where they overhear Lieutenant Bohdan discussing a recent encounter with the Sun Summoner and how her only way out will be through passage on the harbor. With this, they devise a plan to offer Alina and Mal charter on Sturmhond's ship, which nearly results in an altercation between them and the First Army.[1]

The following day, Tamar and Tolya bond with Alina over their mutual alienation from being both Ravkan and Shu. Blood is blood, regardless of what anyone else thinks. They chose Sturmhond because he understands that. They also reveal that they're Heartrenders. That evening, the crew arrive at the island of Jelka and enter a cave, where the Sea Whip is located. They lose two crew members in the attack and nearly lose Mal, forcing Alina to kill the beast, whose scales she uses to amplify her powers.[2]

Refuge at the Spinning Wheel[]

With Alina now amplified by the Stag and Sea Whip, the twins and Sturmhond escort her and Mal into the Fold, where she's unable to destroy the Fold and the Hummingbird goes crashing into Ravka. Once on the ground, they're approached by the First Army, and Sturmhond reveals that he's actually Prince Nikolai Lantsov, who proceeds to take them to the Spinning Wheel, his invention workshop and a refuge for Grisha.[3]

Tamar accompanies Alina as she questions David about the Darkling and merzost, which he claims comes at too high of a price. After parting ways with Tolya, who leaves to retrieve the Neshyenyer, Tamar attends Alina and Nikolai's engagement party, which is interrupted by the Darkling's nichevo'ya, which kills several of the guests. Tamar, Alina, Nadia, and Adrik flee the scene, heading down into a concealed access point, where they are confronted by the Darkling and his nichevo'ya, but Alina holds off long enough for everyone to escape.[4]

Having retreated into the tunnels following their encounter with the Darkling and his nichevo'ya, which left Adrik badly wounded, Tamar amputates Adrik's arm. She tells Nadia that if her brother is even half as strong as her, then he'll pull through, leading Nadia to question Tamar about her own brother and if she's worried that Tolya won't be able to find them. Tamar isn't concerned, showing Nadia her necklace and saying that they have their own way of finding each other.[5]

After learning that Mal is the third amplifier, Tamar has an alternative to killing him. She proposes simply stopping Mal's heart temporarily while David fuses a fragment of Mal's bone with Alina beforehand so that when Mal's heart stops, the amplification will commence. However, before they can amputate Mal's finger, the camp is attacked by nichevo'ya and then consumed by the Fold.[6]

Tamar and Tolya are among a small group who band together to survive attacks both from volcra and nichevo'ya, barricading themselves in the chapel until Alina destroys the Fold and kills the Darkling. With Nikolai deciding to stay for his coronation as king, Tamar and Tolya are left in command of the Volkvolny with Mal acting as Sturmhond in his absence.[7]
