The Pit is a boardinghouse located in a less savory part of Cofton, Novyi Zem. It was nicknamed by Malyen Oretsev.
History[]
Siege and Storm[]
When Alina Starkov and Malyen Oretsev travel to Cofton, they rent a room in the Pit for the price of Alina's golden hairpin. They stay there for two weeks, sleeping in a room they share with six others.
However, upon heading back one day, they encounter the Darkling and his Grisha waiting for them. He ends up capturing them both, but not before showing Alina the new power he has gained in the Shadow Fold because of her. He is now able to create shadow creatures called nichevo'ya, and one of them bites Alina on the shoulder.[1]
Description[]
The Pit is crowded and filthy, with minimal privacy, but cheap. It is two stories high, with peeling paint and a sign in the window falsely advertising hot baths and tick-free beds in several languages. A sagging porch is in front, and a tavern takes up most of the lower floor of the boardinghouse, where workers usually sit and drink. The landlord is an immigrant from Kerch.
The second story is in worse shape than the public rooms. The hallway stinks of cabbage and tobacco, while the carpet is faded and threadbare. The rooms are shabby and low-ceilinged, with grimy windows.[1]
