Tolya Yul-Bataar is the twin brother of Tamar Kir-Bataar, and a member of Sturmhond's crew.
Biography[]
Helping Alina find the Sea Whip[]
Tolya and Tamar arrive in Novyi Zem, where they overhear Lieutenant Bohdan discussing a recent sighting of the Sun Summoner and how her only way out will be through passage on the harbor. And so, they devise a plan to offer Alina and Mal charter on Sturmhond's ship, which nearly results in an altercation between them and the First Army.[1]
The following day, Tolya and Tamar bond with Alina over their mutual alienation due to being both Ravkan and Shu. Blood is blood, regardless of any other factors. They chose Sturmhond because he understands that. They also reveal that they're Heartrender. That evening, they arrive at the island of Jelka and enter a cave where they are attacked by the Sea Whip. They lose two crew members and nearly lose Mal, forcing Alina to kill the beast, whose scales she uses to amplify her powers.[2]
Arriving in East Ravka[]
With the Stag and Sea Whip amplifying Alina's powers, the twins and Sturmhond escort her and Mal into the Shadow Fold. Unfortunately, she's unable to destroy the Fold and the Hummingbird goes crashing into Ravka, where they're approached by the First Army and Sturmhond reveals that he's actually Prince Nikolai Lantsov and proceeds to take them to the Spinning Wheel, his invention workshop and a refuge for Grisha.[3]
Tolya is approached by Mal about a legend regarding a Shu Han blade called the Neshyenyer. The legend claims that a Fabrikator named Neyar created the blade, which was allegedly so sharp that it could cut shadow. Tolya is skeptical of its existence, but shares Mal's theory with Nikolai, who agrees that the blade may work against Kirigan's nichevo'ya and sends Tolya out on a mission to find the Crows and have them retrieve the blade.[4]
Searching for the Neshyenyer[]
Tolya and Zoya track down the Crows in Ketterdam and enlist in their help to find the Neshyenyer, informing them that Prince Nikolai is willing to pay them whatever they see fit. Kaz and Nina meet with The Disciple's fence, a woman named Ohval Saran, who claims to have no knowledge of the blade. Suspecting that she's lying, they break into her home, where they are poisoned by an orange gas, though Tolya slows his heart rate to slow the effects of the poison.[5]
Having slowed the poison, Tolya manages to call out to Wylan and inform him of the dangers they face before being knocked unconscious and hallucinating. Tolya finds himself back on the ship, where he finds Tamar bleeding from a sword wound in her stomach. He asks who did it, and she replies that it was him. Tolya awakens after being given the antidote by Inej and proceeds to feed Jesper a cyan morpho butterfly as well. Once they've recovered, they wait for Ohval to return and attack her, keeping her distracted long enough for Kaz to find her aging husband, The Disciple, who reveals that Ohval made the Neshyenyer. Only then does Ohval agree to give them the blade, with Toyla promising to return it.[6]
Tolya has returned to the fort with Zoya and the Crows, There, he helps take out several of Kirigan's Grisha single-handedly.[7]
As they search for Alina and Mal, Tolya, Tamar, Nikolai, the Crows, and Nadia and Adrik are forced to barricade themselves in the chapel after being attacked by volcra and nichevo'ya, who are defeated after Alina destroys the Fold and kills the Darkling. With Nikolai staying behind for his coronation as king, Tolya and Tamar are left in command of the Volkvolny, with Mal acting as Sturmhond in his absence.[8]
