The Grishaverse

"The river was the heart of Velisyana, and when it went silent, all that was left was for the town to die."
Little Knife

Velisyana was a city in Ravka located south of Arkesk along the northern road. It was known for the quality of its flour and the beauty of Yeva Luchova, the Duke's daughter, but was abandoned after the destruction of its flour mill.

History[]

The Duke of Velisyana installed dams and dikes to contain the river and prevent it from flooding his lands. Unbeknownst to the townspeople, a water spirit was trapped in the millpond by the dam. He also built the giant waterwheel and flour mill, increasing the town's production of flour. The Duke had the image of his beautiful daughter stamped on every bag of flour from the mill, prompting men from all over Ravka to travel to Velisyana to see her. Uri Levkin was the second wealthiest man in the town.

Semyon the Ragged broke the stone dam with an axe made from Grisha steel, freeing the river spirit. It smashed the mill to pieces and ripped off the waterwheel, which rolled down the banks before settling in the underbrush of a meadow. The riverbed and millpond were left empty, and without the mill to provide flour, the town emptied. The Duke alone remained in his crumbling palace.

Description[]

"Weeds and wildflowers crowd the cobblestones. The shops are empty, and the doors have rotted on their hinges, leaving only gaping mouths. The town square is overgrown with brambles and the church roof has long since given way; amid the shattered pews, the great dome lies on its side, collecting rainwater, its gold leaf stripped away by time or some enterprising thief."

The palace for the Duke had a parlor with a fireplace. Yeva's window at the palace was high above the street, its casement carved with lilies. It led to a balcony that overlooked Suitors' Square, a square below the palace where suitors would declare their love for Yeva, beg for her hand in marriage, and perform tricks or duels. Velisyana had a bell tower with a clock to chime the hour.

There was a fallow field at the edge of the southern wood. Velisyana's flour mill included "a giant waterwheel with sturdy steel spokes, perfect in its balance."[1]
