The Grishaverse

The Volkvolny is a large schooner and the flagship of Sturmhond's fleet. Tamar Kir-Bataar says that he captured it from a Zemeni pirate that was picking off Ravkan ships near Os Kervo, and liked it so much that he took it for his own flagship. Its name means Wolf of the Waves.[1]

History[]

Siege and Storm[]

Sturmhond was hired by the Darkling to help him for a sizeable amount of money. After the Darkling captures Alina Starkov and Malyen Oretsev, he takes them to a stolen whaling ship, where his Grisha and Sturmhond's crew are.[2] They travel north for a week and reach the Bone Road before slowing. The Darkling then threatens Mal into helping him find Rusalye to hunt and use to create Ilya Morozova's second amplifier. Six days later, Mal succeeds,[3] but as the harpooners attack Rusalye, another ship arrives. Nikolai turns against the Darkling and he, Alina, Mal, and his crew flee the whaler and jump on the Volkvolny.[4]

Ruin and Rising[]

Nikolai Lantsov sends his mother and father on the Kingfisher to Os Kervo, where the Volkvony waits to take them to the Southern Colonies.[5]

Rule of Wolves[]

Zoya Nazyalensky and Nikolai meet up with the Volkvony in Ketterdam so they can steal titanium from Rentveer without arousing suspicion aboard the Cormorant.[6] The ship docks in Fifth Harbor, where it remains for a few days to be inspected by the Merchant Council. Privyet greets them as Sturmhond.[7]

Description[]

The Volkvolny is a sleek schooner with at least three masts and a fantail stern.[8][9] It is a fast and silent vessel. Every inch of the ship is used; for example, the crew sleeps on the gun deck, in hammocks that can be rolled up and replaced by the cannons. Since the ship is outfitted with every kind of Grisha, including a Corporalki healer, there is no need for a otkazat'sya surgeon onboard. Instead, the surgeon's cabin becomes Tamar's berth. It is just big enough for a chest and two hammocks.[1]
