Wylan Hendriks is a member of the Crows. Working under Kaz Brekker as his demolitions expert, Wylan supplies the team with explosives and getaways.

Biography

Joining the Crows

Wylan receives an unexpected visit from Kaz, who questions him about the flash bomb he previously used to escape the Darkling. Kaz needs Wylan to make a new package. Although he's reluctant to do so, Kaz is prepared to pay for his services. Wylan then gets another unexpected visit, but this time from Jesper, to whom Wylan explains that he's their new demolitions expert. Kaz then leads the crew to the rooftop, where they watch as Wylan's explosives are used to blow up Pekka Rollins' club.

Kaz seeks to take further action against Pekka by tracking his private schedule and breaking into his accountant's office. Wylan and Jesper are sent to deal with the former by tracking Pekka's driver. During this mission, Wylan shares with Jesper that he met Kaz while practicing at the tannery, leading Jesper to question if they've met before. Unfortunately, they've followed the driver right into a trap, with their wagon being sprayed with bullets. While taking cover, Jesper recalls that he and Wylan have in fact hooked up before. Despite being outnumbered, Jesper manages to take out Pekka's goons with minor help from Wylan.

Developing feelings for Jesper

Wylan and Jesper are tasked with investigating Pekka's alleged glass factory in Appelbroek, where they discover there is no factory and that Pekka's property is actually a country estate where he keeps his secret son, Alby. When they're discovered by the help, Wylan claims that they're piano repairmen. As they're returning to Black Veil, Wylan asks Jesper not to tell Kaz about Alby. However, Kaz is already aware of the child, who Wylan pleads with him not to hurt.

The Crows move forward with their plan to destroy Pekka's reputation and profit by hitting all of his businesses with a compound created by Wylan that's meant to mimic firepox. Wylan and Jesper hand out Komedie Brute costumes and vials of the compound to all of the Dregs. As word of an alleged firepox outbreak begins to spread, Kaz leverages this, as well as the knowledge of Alby's existence, to force Pekka to sign a quitclaim deed for Inej and a confession for the murders of Tante Heleen and Constable Sem. Afterward, Wylan and Jesper discuss the night they first met and how Wylan ran out on Jesper after they hooked up because he assumed Jesper would do the same, which Jesper admits is true. While he can't make any promises, he does wish to pursue something more with Wylan, and they proceed to have sex.

Searching for the Neshyenyer

Jesper and Wylan are shown waking up in a room, flirting for a moment before being interrupted by Kaz and called downstairs. Kaz proceeds to tell the group that the Crows are hired by Prince Nikolai to retrieve the Neshyenyer blade and deliver it to Alina in East Ravka. Should they succeed in their retrieval, the Prince will pay whatever fee. While discussing their fake passport names, Jesper discovers that Wylan cannot read. Embarrassed, Wylan becomes distant from Jesper, who attempts to make Wylan feel better by complimenting him on his knowledge of explosives.

That night, as the Crows and Tolya break into Ohval's home, Jesper apologizes for what he said at the Dregs Club about Wylan not knowing how to read and that it's nothing to be ashamed of, but Wylan tells Jesper that he's in no position to offer advice when he's hiding the fact that he's a Durast, which instantly upset Jesper, who joins the others as they enter Ohval's home.

Wylan remains outside, completely unaware that his friends inside are being poisoned. He even crosses paths with cyan morpho butterfly as it pollinates an orange Datura Meloxia flower. The butterflies process the deadly nectar of the flower and pollinate the plants in return. They need each other to survive. Not long later, he hears Tolya call out to him and inform him that they've been poisoned. Wylan creates a controlled explosive to blow a small hole in the door, allowing him to see inside. Inej awakens and informs him that they're hallucinating from being exposed from orange vapors. Realizing they've been poisoned by Datura Meloxia, Wylan feeds them the cyan morpho butterflies, as their bodies contain the antidote. When Ohval finally returns, a fight ensues, but after Kaz finds her aging husband, The Disciple, she agrees to allow them to borrow the blade. As the group leaves Ohval's home, Jesper tells Wylan he doesn't want to hide who he is anymore (referring to his being Grisha). Wylan shares that when he saw the Datura Meloxia, all he wanted to do was tell Jesper about it. They then share a kiss and a hug.

The Crows arrive in Ravka with the Neshyenyer. There, Wylan, Jesper, and Kaz help defend the fort from the Darkling's army. While searching for Alina and Mal, they are forced to barricade themselves in the chapel after being attacked by volcra and nichevo'ya, who are defeated after Alina destroys the Fold and kills the Darkling.

Personality and traits

In the show, much as in the books, Wylan is more reserved than the other crows. He is shown to be kind and compassionate, with an aversion to violence (most especially unnecessary violence).

Wylan is quite quick-witted and smart in a very humble way. He finds the difficult chemistry work he is required to do to be quite easy and is one of the crows’ most logical thinkers.

Physical description

Short in stature, at least compared to the other crows, Wylan has large dark eyes, spiky brown hair and an overall mousy appearance.

Skills and abilities

Adept at chemistry, Wylan serves as the demolition man for the crew.

Wylan is severely dyslexic and unable to read, which he hides from those around him and seems to be ashamed of.
