Ylva Brum is the wife of Jarl Brum and the mother of Hanne Brum.
Biography[]
King of Scars[]
Ylva walks with her husband to meet Nina Zenik, thanking her for saving Jarl's life and bringing about a change in Hanne's behavior. She embraces her daughter, and the Brums and Nina eat dinner together afterward.[1]
Rule of Wolves[]
Ylva and her husband trail Hanne and Nina as they head to a show in Djerholm for the Vinetkälla celebrations. However, when the play takes an unexpected turn, Ylva tries to herd Hanne and Nina away, then scolds Jarl for losing his temper.[2]
When Enke Bergstrin arrives to see Hanne and Nina, Ylva calls them from their room and defends the girls who have hidden contraband at the convent, supporting Hanne's statements.[3] Ylva later warns Hanne about entering Heartwood, but watches the processions giddily when Hanne remains adamant about taking part in the event.[4] Ylva herds away the crowd and helps Hanne recover after Prince Rasmus Grimjer collapses.[5]
Ylva admonishes Jarl when he questions Nina about her identity.[6] After the bombing of Os Alta, Ylva notices Nina's unwell appearance and tries to care for her, even when summoning her to meet Queen Agathe Grimjer.[7] Ylva accompanies Hanne to the Heartwood ball but insists Nina leave early, believing her to have fallen ill a second time.[8] She later finds Hanne and Nina kissing in their room. Ylva travels to Leviathan's Mouth with the rest of her family and Nina, but freezes when Prince Rasmus requests Hanne's presence alone. When Fjerdan soldiers are electrocuted in the water, Ylva begins to lose hope.[9]
Soon after, Ylva sobs over Hanne's body on the deck, believing her child to have fallen from an observation tower. She tries to stop Nina from hurting Jarl,[10] and insists on staying by his side after Joran shoots him.[11]
Personality and traits[]
Ylva is extremely protective of those she cares about, especially Hanne, and is quick to defend others. She shows much more empathy and understanding than her husband. Ylva is often overcome by strong emotions, laughing giddily and sobbing in adjacent moments.[5]
Physical description[]
Ylva has thick chestnut hair that almost reaches her waist. When Nina first saw her, she wore a beautiful gown of gold silk that made her brown skin glow.[1] She is tall, lean, and has slender fingers thanks to her Hedjut ancestry.[4] Ylva almost always looks worried.[3]
