Yuyeh Sesh (Despise Your Heart) is the fifth episode of season 2 of Netflix's Shadow and Bone and the thirteenth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Alina’s connection to Kirigan grows increasingly unstable after his latest strike. The Crows head to Shu Han on a mission to retrieve a legendary sword.
Plot summary[]
Those who managed to survive the attack of The Darkling hide in underground caves, while Alina anxiously searches for Mal. Nikolai reminds her that their priority is to save Ravka. Baghra and Genya arrive in the tunnels. Nikolai is initially angry when he realizes Genya's identity, but Alina defends her, explaining that she did what was necessary to survive. Eventually, Nikolai relents and assures Genya of her safety.
Genya does her best to tend to Adrik's injured arm, but she avoids being seen by David because of her facial scars. While attempting to hide, she encounters Tatiana, who immediately summons the guards. She reveals how she had been poisoning the King per the Darkling's orders. She had been putting poison in her body for weeks so every time the King would assault her, he took some of it into himself. Nikolai intervenes, rebuking his mother for her complacency in the matter.
Later, David confronts Genya and she confesses that she was able to locate the caves through Baghra's amplification of her ability to sense familiar heartbeats—David’s.
Alina confides in Baghra about her struggle with seeing the Darkling in her mind. Baghra cautions her that he will persist in invading her thoughts, and urges her to find a way to block him out. Instead, Alina projects herself to Kirigan and admits that he was right about her being destined for more.
Despite Vasily's efforts to deter him, Mal manages to find his way to the tunnels. With Baghra and Nikolai, they arrive just as Alina reaches out to the Darkling using the tether. Alina attempts to trick the Darkling by cradling his face and pretending to kiss him, before directing her powers to his hand. However, she loses her focus and the attempt fails. The Darkling is infuriated by this, ending any remaining hope he had to bring Alina back to his side. Alina and Mal end up arguing.
Baghra confronts Alina about her connection with the Darkling and she admits that she feels him every time she uses her powers. Alina reveals the complicated nature of her relationship with him, and how her powers and actions are all tied to him. However, Baghra reassures her that her will is stronger than her son's, and that she has the power to heal the wound he has inflicted on the country. Baghra offers to help Alina find the firebird.
Alina expresses her concerns about Mal to Nikolai, as he has never walked away from her before. Nikolai reassures her that Mal loves her, and Alina returns the engagement ring to him in preparation for her journey to seek out the firebird. In exchange, Nikolai gives her his lucky compass to wear around her neck.
Kaz wakes up from a nightmare where he's floating among dead bodies from the firepox outbreak, including his brother Jordie's. He frantically scrubs his hands. Meanwhile, Jesper and Wylan wake up in a happier state, but their morning is interrupted by Kaz's arrival. Tolya Yul-Bataar and Zoya have arrived with a new mission for the Crows: to go get the Neshyenyer.
The Crows are surprised to learn that both Alina and the Darkling are alive, and the Darkling now commands an invincible army of shadow monsters. Kaz confirms that the Neshyenyer in Ahmrat Jen is a fake and believes it was stolen by The Disciple, as his sources have indicated. Inej returns to the Slat and tells Kaz she's there for Alina, not him.
The group travels to Shu Han, where Kaz and Nina try to obtain information on The Disciple's whereabouts over tea with Ohval Saran, his assistant. When their plan seems to fail, Kaz takes off his gloves and begins to panic. Inej follows him and returns his gloves. The Crows reconvene and discover that Ohval is not just a fence, but also The Disciple, meaning they need to break into her house to retrieve the blade.
Nina and Zoya watch Ohval while the rest of the Crows go to her house to break in. Ohval catches Nina. Her house ends up being a trap, releasing gas and making the Crows pass out.
Pekka Rollins goes to Hellgate where he is challenged by Matthias’ cellmate. Pekka fights him until he dies from his injuries.

Trivia[]
- In the Grishaverse novels, "yuyeh sesh" and "ni weh sesh" are paired Shu Han proverbs that encourage someone to do what must be done. These are the titles for episode 5 and episode 6 respectively as both episodes are very tied together.[1]
